But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
(Isaiah 53:5 (NIV))
Have you ever scraped a knee or have you ever broken an arm? Have you ever stepped on a nail? Have you ever fallen or had a black eye?
These are not fun things to have happen. They cause pain and suffering.
How can someone's suffering bring peace and healing to others?
You wouldn't think that it was possible, especially since pain and suffering are isolated and personal. They impact only the person who is experiencing the pain and suffering. Others may feel empathy, but they do not have a personal stake in the pain and suffering. They can walk away and their lives will basically be the same as they were. So, how is it that what Jesus faced can potentially impact every single person who has ever lived?
Think about it from this perspective.
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
(Romans 3:23 (NIV))
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(Romans 6:23 (NIV))
John said it in such a way that hopefully allows everyone to understand.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.
(John 3:16-18 (NIV))
Jesus was crucified for our sins. He bore the pain and suffering that was meant for each one of us. Jesus took our pain and suffering so that we could know grace and mercy and God's love.
It is so true that by His wounds we have been healed.
Have you accepted healing?
