Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come.
(Mark 13:33 (NIV))
What does it mean to be on guard?
We think of being alert and watching our backs when we are in physical situations that are less than ideal. We think of being alert when we are driving a car. We pay attention to our surroundings when we are in large crowds, but do we expect to be alert and on guard with respect to the spiritual realm and how it manifests itself in the events transpiring in the world around us?
Are we even paying attention to what is happening in the world, or are we simply complaining about the results and how they impact us individually?
Are we truly watching to see what the Lord is doing?
"Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. When I say to a wicked person, 'You will surely die,' and you do not warn them or speak out to dissuade them from their evil ways in order to save their life, that wicked person will die for their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood. But if you do warn the wicked person and they do not turn from their wickedness or from their evil ways, they will die for their sin; but you will have saved yourself.
(Ezekiel 3:17-19 (NIV))
Just as Ezekiel recorded God's warning to the people of Israel, we, as followers of Jesus, are given the same task to watch, to be on our guard, and to be alert. We have been given what to watch for in God's Word. Are you paying attention to the signs?
Are you alert and on guard?
