Be Still . . .
Devotionals for Daily Living ©
Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
(John 6:35 (NIV))
As a living, breathing human, you have known the pangs of hunger!
They may not be the severe hunger of starvation, but you have known hunger. You get a very uncomfortable emptiness in your stomach. You may get weak, and you may begin to experience some dizziness. Some people who experience hunger will get belligerent and irritable. If you suffer from a condition such as diabetes, you may even pass out. In essence, none of these are experiences that we would ever want to replicate if we have experienced them.
Our spirit hungers in much the same way as our physical bodies hungers. We nourish our physical bodies when we are hungry, but do we nourish our spirits when we are in need of sustenance?
Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"
(Matthew 4:4 (NIV))
We have an emptiness that we long to fill. We have an aching that nothing seems to ever satisfy. We have a feeling that if we don't satisfy this emptiness, this hunger, then we are lost without any recourse. Too many turn to the things of this world to satisfy this spiritual hunger. No matter what they may turn to, they are still left feeling helpless, hopeless and lost.
Do you feel helpless, hopeless and lost?
Do you feel an emptiness in your life where Jesus should be?
Jesus laid the foundation that allows those who follow Him to be filled. He also gave us a physical reminder that only He can satisfy this emptiness, this hunger.
While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body."
(Matthew 26:26 (NIV))
Are you hungry?
