Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent."
(John 6:29 (NIV))

What do you think of when you hear the word "work?"

If you are like most people, work means labor. It means performing a task. It means sustained physical or mental effort.

In essence, most people think that work is arduous.

When Adam and Eve fell from grace, humanity was told that we would toil for our needs. Humanity also believed that we had to do good works in order to please God.

According to Jesus, we need to rethink that concept. We need to consider that Jesus came to set the captives free, and I honestly believe that this also includes setting us free from the concept of doing works in order to please God.

Think about that for a moment as it relates to today's verse. All that we have to do is believe in Jesus and that is what pleases God. Believing in Jesus is the "work" that we are required to do to please God.

Is this also part of the meaning in the following words?

For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
(Matthew 11:30 (NIV))

I think it is, for before Jesus, it was impossible to get to God, for we are all sinners in need of a savior. Jesus told us that He is the way, the truth and the life. He has done the work for us. All that we have to do is accept this grace and mercy by believing in Jesus!

That is our job description as followers of Jesus.
