"Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.
(Matthew 24:42 (NIV))

What does it mean to keep watch?

If you have ever been in the military, you understand the term. If you have ever been a child who was doing something that you didn't want the adults to know about, you had someone keep watch.

Basically, when you keep watch you are watching to see if someone is coming.

A watchman is supposed to sound the alarm! They have a responsibility. They are to remain vigilant.

But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes someone's life, that person's life will be taken because of their sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for their blood.'
(Ezekiel 33:6 (NIV))

This responsibility not only applies to the physical world. It also applies to God's timeline and the spiritual world.

The parable of the ten virgins compares the story of the bridegroom returning with the return of Jesus. Not everyone who said that they were waiting was truly prepared.

"At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps.
(Matthew 25:1-3 (NIV))

Jesus, as the bridegroom, will return for His bride. Are you prepared and keeping watch, or are you unprepared and asleep?

Take a long, hard look at your life and your faith.

Are you truly prepared?

Are you keeping watch?
