The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
     and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
(Proverbs 9:10 (NIV))

It is easy to associate knowledge with understanding, but have you come to the realization that fear can bring wisdom?

If you don't believe me, think about the first time that you touched something hot. I think that it is safe to say that you became very cautious and wise around anything that could burn you again.

Let's take that realization and move from the physical to the spiritual aspects of your existence.

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
(Romans 3:23 (NIV))

Sin is missing the mark. Sin is falling short of what God desires for you. Sin has been the curse of humanity ever since the fall from grace in the Garden of Eden.

There is more!

For the wages of sin is death,
(Romans 6:23a (NIV))

And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,
(Hebrews 9:27 (ESV))

Each of us are to be judged. Each of us are condemned because of our sin.

There is hope!

but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(Romans 6:23b (NIV))

If we fear the Lord's judgment, we must turn to the Lord and seek His mercy. That mercy comes only through Jesus. We must recognize the wisdom of fearing the Lord because of our sins and the consequences of our sins. We must come to the knowledge that we are offered grace and mercy that allows us to escape the consequences of our sins if we turn to Jesus. We must seek wisdom and understanding in order to come to the saving grace that we are freely offered.
