For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.
(Luke 9:24 (NIV))

If you try to hold on too tightly, things will slip away!

Things will not go as you wish. In fact, if you prioritize the things of this world, whatever it is that you desire most will slip away. It will never be achieved for any length of time. Wealth, fame and power are fleeting. If you spend so much time focused on this physical life, you will miss the joy of a life filled with God's grace and mercy.

Even so, far too many people try to gain all that the world has to offer.

What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?
(Mark 8:36 (NIV))

Think about these concepts from God's perspective. Let's start with a few truths.

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
(Romans 3:23 (NIV))

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(Romans 6:23 (NIV))

We are all sinners who focus on our sin. We long to live this life and live it to the fullest. While we do this, we overlook the truths of the passages from Romans referenced above. Because we focus on this life, we fail to recognize our need for a Savior. We fail to recognize that everything we do in this life will result in not only a physical death, but a spiritual death as well.

What do you think of when you think of surrender?

If you are like most people, you immediately think of loss. You think of a situation that results in punishment or possibly even death. Is this an accurate depiction of your definition of surrender?

That is not God's definition!

When we surrender to the Lord, we are admitting that we are a sinner in need of a Savior. We are admitting that this sinful life that we lead is beyond our ability to correct. We are admitting that we need someone to take us by the hand and lead us through all of the sinful trappings of this world. We are admitting that we would rather surrender, or lose our life now, and gain an eternity with the Lord.

Based on this, I have something for you to consider. Is it better to lose your life later and miss out on eternity with the Lord or lose your life now to gain an eternity with the Lord?
